Spacious Design

Space, magical space – and lots of it – might be the biggest perk of buying a move-up, semi-estate home in Calgary. So the million-dollar question is, how will you use it? Between your new garage, large kitchen pantry, spacious laundry room, entry closets and linen cupboards you’ll have plenty of storage space. This means that you’re free to transform an extra bedroom into a dream room. Here are a few concepts that we’ve dreamed up to help inspire your creativity.

Namaste: If you’re seeking a little serenity in your life, a meditation and reflection room might be the answer. Start with a soothing paint colour on the walls, then hang airy sheers on the window, install a dimmer and use a soft overhead bulb. An aromatherapy diffuser and small indoor water feature will help create a peaceful atmosphere. Add a full-length mirror on one of the walls and place your yoga mat in the centre of the room. Create a reading nook with floor pillows or a beanbag chair in the corner. Complete the room with decor and artwork that inspire tranquility.

Concert Master: A carpeted room with a door is fantastic when you have a child learning a new instrument. Your little maestro can strum his or her heart out in your very own dedicated music room. Choose a rich paint colour and decorate with score sheets, antique instruments or cool black and white shots of musicians. You can even hang smaller instruments – like guitars – on the wall. Add some shelving for sheet music and/or instrument storage, a docking station for tunes and comfy audience seating.

Game On: Create a family space dedicated to play time instead of screen time with a games room. Place a large round table in the centre of the room and shelving storage around the perimeter for board games, puzzles, chess, checkers, poker chips and pens and paper for scoring. Add a small bar fridge and snack area as well as a docking station for music. A games room is also great for afternoon bridge and late night poker – so install an overhead dimmer and choose décor that appeals to all ages.

Studio Masterpiece: Let your creativity flow in an art, or arts and crafts studio. Bring in woven mats for the floor, and keep the colours neutral. Add an easel by the window to capture the best light. Finish with shelving and storage for supplies, a large table and comfortable chair. If you have children, think about including a smaller easel, lower height storage shelf and washable paints and markers for them to use.

Kid’s Zone: As with the music room, it’s always nice to have a door on an area that’s dedicated for the kiddos. When they’re younger you can child proof the room so that it’s always a safe place for your kids to have quiet playtime. Once they get a bit older they’ll likely crave a space that’s just for them. Be sure to have lots of open storage so that your kids can easily access and return toys and games. Simply change the décor and activities/toys as they grow.
